Introducing BrainsWay Deep TMS Treatment for Depression

A revolutionary depression treatment that has changed the field of mental healthcare, Deep TMS™ has been FDA-cleared to safely and effectively treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) through BrainsWay’s patented H-coil technology.

Deep TMS treatment for depression works by utilizing a magnetic field that manages to directly reach wider and deeper brain regions, regulating the neural activity of brain structures related to major depressive disorder – specifically the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC).

Repeated peer-reviewed studies have found Deep TMS to be a highly effective treatment that can facilitate a profound improvement in patients’ mental health, alleviating symptoms of depression and contributing to a significantly greater quality of life.

As a noninvasive procedure, Deep TMS is a well-tolerated treatment that does not cause any adverse or long-lasting side effects. It does not require a significant recovery period, and the 20-min treatment can easily be integrated into each patient’s day-to-day schedule.

Deep TMS Depression Treatment Protocol
BrainsWay’s unique, patented H-Coil technology is held inside a cushioned helmet fitted onto the patient’s head. Upon activation, the H-coil produces magnetic pulses that regulate the brain’s neural activity.

BrainsWay’s Deep TMS sessions for depression last approximately 20 minutes, as opposed to 40-minute standard rTMS sessions.  Alternatively, a 3-min intermittent theta burst (iTBS) session is also available.   A Deep TMS treatment plan usually requires daily sessions over four weeks, followed by periodic maintenance sessions.

The following graphic details Deep TMS’s treatment protocol, with its Acute and Continuation phases:

PTSD treatment works. Those who have gone through trauma can learn to feel safe in the world and cope with stress. There are several helpful treatments, so you have options. There is no one treatment that is right for everyone. Working with your health care provider, you can decide together which is best for you based on benefits, risks, side effects and other preferences.

Talk Therapies

Studies show that certain talk therapies (psychotherapies) work best. The talk therapies with the most research support are trauma-focused. "Trauma-focused" means that the treatment focuses on the traumatic event and what it means to you. The talk therapies that work best are: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).

In these talk therapies, you'll learn ways to work through your trauma, by visualizing, talking or thinking about the traumatic event until it becomes less upsetting. Or you will focus on changing unhelpful beliefs about the trauma or since the trauma happened. These talk therapies usually last about 8-16 sessions. There are other options that have less research support but may be good options for you. Learn more about Talk Therapies for PTSD.

Medication

There are medications that are helpful for treating PTSD symptoms. Your best options are those with the most evidence: paroxetine, sertraline and venlafaxine. Over time, you will work with your provider to check on your response to the medication, discuss side effects, and change the dose, if needed. The benefits of medications take time to work and end after you stop taking them. And there are some medications that are not helpful for PTSD. Learn more about Medications for PTSD.

I get the same questions any time I tell someone that my law firm has a psychedelics practice group. One of the top 5 is: “is microdosing psilocybin legal?” The short answer is no. But like any area of the law, it’s complex. Today, I’ll dissect the legality of microdosing psilocybin.

What is psilocybin microdosing?

Psilocybin microdosing means taking very small amounts of psilocybin. People who microdose may avoid hallucinations but still experience other positive effects. As scientists continue to study the effects of microdosing, some studies show that it has positive effects on anxiety and depression.

What are the key psilocybin laws?

The federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA) schedules certain drugs into one of five schedules. Psilocybin is a Schedule I substance, meaning that it is illegal to possess, obtain, or produce. The feds believe psilocybin has no currently accepted medical use, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse. This is pretty crazy (the FDA seems to believe otherwise), but it’s where we are.

As of today, no state has fully legalized psilocybin (Oregon did, but the program isn’t live yet). Many jurisdictions have decriminalized psilocybin, but that just reduces penalties and/or directs police not to prioritize enforcement. Like with cannabis, even statewide legalization can’t change federal law. But unlike with cannabis, we have no idea what the federal government will do when states roll out psilocybin programs.

Is microdosing psilocybin legal?
The short answer is no. The CSA schedules the chemical psilocybin with no thresholds. A large amount is as illegal as a small amount, though penalties may be different. Persons who microdose psilocybin in cities (for example) that have decriminalized it may be at lesser risk of local prosecution, but that’s it. Federal and even state authorities may still prosecute even microdosing. And there’s no protection at all for commercial activities.

Shrooms, Alice, tweezes, mushies, hongos, pizza toppings, magic mushrooms — everyday lingo for psychedelic mushrooms seems to grow with each generation. Yet leading mycologist Paul Stamets believes it’s time for fans of psilocybin mushrooms to leave such childish slang behind.

Mushroom side effects long term
Obviously, not all hallucinogenic experiences are positive, so nearly every study on psychedelic drugs has included therapists trained to intercede if a trip turns bad and to maximize the outcome if the trip is good.

“This is about allowing someone access into deeper access into their own mental processes, with hopefully greater insight,” Johnson said. “While others might disagree, it does seem very clear that you need therapy to maximize the benefits.”

There are also side effects from psychedelics that go beyond a bad trip. LSD, mescaline and DMT, which is the active ingredient in ayahuasca tea, can increase blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Ayahuasca tea can also induce vomiting. LSD can cause tremors, numbness and weakness, while the use of mescaline can lead to uncoordinated movements. People hunting for psychedelic mushrooms can easily mistake a toxic species for one with psilocybin, “leading to unintentional, fatal poisoning.”

Another issue: Not everyone is a candidate for psychedelic treatment. It won’t work on people currently on SSRIs — the receptors in their brains are already flooded with serotonin. People diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, or who have a family history of psychosis are always screened out of clinical trials, said Frederick Barrett, associate director of the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins.

“If you have a vulnerability to psychosis, it could be that exposing you to a psychedelic could unmask that psychosis or could lead to a psychotic event,” Barnes said.

Then there are the thousands of people with mental health concerns who will never agree to undergo a psychedelic trip. For those people, scientists such as Roth are attempting to find an alternative approach. He and his team recently identified the mechanisms by which psychedelics bond to the brain’s serotonin receptors and are using the knowledge to identify new compounds.

“Our hope is that we can use this information to ultimately make drugs that mimic the benefits of psychedelic drugs without the psychedelic experience,” Roth said.

“What if we could give people who are depressed or suffer from PTSD or anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder a medication, and they could wake up the next day and be fine without any side effects? That would be transformative.”

How Long Do Shrooms (Psilocybin) Stay in Your System?

Mushrooms stay in your system for 24 hours or longer. Their effects last up to 6 hours.

How long routine drug tests can detect the presence of shrooms in your system also varies based on the type of test. For example:

Urine tests: Most people eliminate psilocybin within 24 hours. A urine drug test won’t detect their presence for much longer than this.
Hair tests: Psilocybin is detectable for as long as 90 days.
Blood tests: It takes psilocybin about 15 hours to leave your bloodstream. This is about how long it’s detectable in blood. However, blood tests are rarely used to detect shrooms.
There are currently no reliable saliva drug tests for mushrooms.

Factors That Affect Detection Time

Factors affecting the time mushrooms stay in your system include:

Time Between Ingesting and Testing

The body eliminates mushrooms quickly. To detect mushrooms, testing must occur within 24 hours or less unless it’s a hair drug test. The sooner the test after taking mushrooms, the higher the likelihood they’ll be detected.

Half-Life

This is how long it takes for half of the mushrooms or any other drug to leave your system. The average half life of psilocybin is 3 hours.1

Mushroom Species

There are as many as 200 different species of psilocybin mushrooms. The higher the amount of hallucinogen present, the longer it remains detectable

Magic Mushrooms

For individuals in tune with drug culture, the aesthetic of bright, colorful mushrooms can be found on posters, t-shirts and on album covers of CDs and records. Shrooms, or magic mushrooms are a commonly recognized, natural hallucinogen. It is also considered to be one of the least dangerous narcotics that you can ingest. So what is it really?

What are Psychedelic Mushrooms?

Mushrooms containing the chemical psilocybin are considered to be ‘magic’ mushrooms. Ingesting these fungi produces intense hallucinations in the user. Historians hypothesize that psychedelic mushrooms were used in religious ceremonies and rituals around the world as far back as 6,000 years ago. Evidence of use has been found on cave rock art, and in sculptures in nearly every continent. Many users, even today, describe using mushrooms as a spiritual experience. In fact, in some countries, its use is still legal if it is used for religious ritual or for spirituality.

What is Psilocybin?

Psilocybin is a natural psychoactive, hallucinogenic substance that is found in hundreds of species of mushrooms. Though this magical formula has been used for hundreds of years, the compound was first isolated in 1958. Ingestion is the primary method of intake. Typically, the mushrooms are dried out and put on food to overcome the bitter taste, though they can also be brewed in tea or made into an oil. This chemical is converted into psilocin by the body, which has hallucinogenic effects that are similar to DMT or LSD. The intensity of the high is dependent on the species of mushroom and how much is ingested. As with any substance, the user’s physiology plays a role. It has a low toxicity and typically does not cause harm to the body.

Abusing Mushrooms

Psilocybin is a non-addictive substance. This means that despite it having powerful effects on the body and mind, there is no craving or withdrawal. Despite there being no actual cravings, many users do enjoy regular recreational use. While it is very rare, it is possible to overdose on magic mushrooms. Psychologically and physically, it is considered to be one of the safest drugs to use. There can be uncomfortable side effects, though, they are not devastating.

To identify the rare but possible risks of overdose, you should be aware of the following:

Panic Attacks
Paranoia
Psychosis
Seizures
Vomiting
Being in a high stress mindset, or in a volatile place that you are not comfortable in can all impact whether or not you experience difficulties while using mushrooms.

Common Symptoms of Lung Cancer

There are several lung-related symptoms of lung cancer that appear after the cancer has been growing for some time, including:

Coughing. Coughing that doesn’t go away or gets worse and is not related to a viral or bacterial infection affecting your lungs.
Shortness of breath. Feeling out of breath, tightness in the chest, feeling like you can’t breathe, or feeling you can’t get enough air. There are non-cancerous conditions that can also cause this symptom. Either way you should have a doctor check your lungs.
Coughing up bloody mucus. Coughing up blood-tinged or rust-colored phlegm or mucus.
Chest pain. Pain that gets worse with laughing, coughing, or deep breathing.
Wheezing. Wheezing is that high-pitched whistling sound that happens when exhaling.
Lung infections that won't clear. Repeated infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis, or a lung infection that won't go away will likely be evaluated further by your doctor for another cause.
Hoarseness. If your voice becomes hoarse for no apparent reason you should have this evaluated by a doctor.
What's Next if You Receive a Lung Cancer Diagnosis?
If the symptoms you noticed and reported to your doctor were caused by lung cancer, you're likely to visit with an oncologist who specializes in lung cancer treatments. They will determine the type of lung cancer, stage, and other factors that allows them to create a personalized treatment plan. If you're in the Colorado Front Range, the Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers team is here to guide you through the process every step of the way.

16 Unexpected Lung Cancer Symptoms You Should Know About

Lung cancer doesn't always show obvious signs or symptoms until it's become more advanced. A cough that won't go away or shortness of breath without another cause are some of the more common symptoms you hear about. But, did you know there are several other surprising signs and symptoms that can indicate lung cancer?

What Causes Lung Cancer and Who Can Get It?
It's probably no surprise that smoking is one of the main causes of lung cancer.

Smoking causes 80% of the lung cancer deaths in women and 90% in men.
Men that smoke are 23 times more likely to get lung cancer.
Female smokers are 13 times more prone to develop lung cancer.

But non-smokers get lung cancer too — risk factors include extensive exposure to radon gas and worked-related exposure to carcinogens such as fumes. Non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke have a 20-30% greater risk for developing lung cancer.

Lung cancer is most common in people over 65. However, younger adults can and do develop lung cancer, but less than 2% of patients are below 35. Learn more about the risk factors for developing lung cancer.

What is lung cancer?

Lung cancer starts when abnormal cells grow and multiply in an uncontrolled way. Cancer that begins in the lungs is called primary lung cancer. If cancer begins in another part of the body and spreads to the lungs it is know as secondary or metastatic cancer in the lung.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the fifth most common cancer diagnosed in Australia excluding non-melanoma cancers. It is responsible for almost one in five cancer deaths in Australia.

It is estimated that more than 14,700 people were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2023. The average age at diagnosis is 72 years old.

Lung cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and it is estimated that one in 20 people will be diagnosed by the time they are 85.

There are two main types of lung cancer:

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for around 85% of cases. There are sub-types of non-small cell lung cancer. The most common are:

adenocarcinoma - begins in mucus-producing cells and makes up about 40% of lung cancers. While this type of lung cancer is most commonly diagnosed in current or former smokers, it is also the most common lung cancer in non-smokers.
squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinoma - commonly develops in the larger airways of the lung.
large cell undifferentiated carcinoma - can appear in any part of the lung and are not clearly squamous cell or adenocarcinoma.
Lung cancer signs and symptoms
Symptoms of lung cancer may include:

·         shortness of breath

·         changes to the voice such as hoarseness

·         chest pain

·         coughing or spitting up blood

·         a new cough that does not go away

·         chest infection that lasts more than three weeks or keeps coming back

·         enlarged fingertips

·         loss of appetite

·         unexplained weight loss

·         tiredness.
